Written by Ai Lyn Lon

Now that you’ve got your results in hand, no matter what it might be, you must be thinking to yourself, “What’s next?”. You feel like you’re stuck at a crossroad while many has already paths set in their mind, high school – college – university – job. However, there’s no hard and fast rule that you MUST go college right after you graduate high school. In fact, considering a non-traditional path may actually help you decide what you want to do in life. Here are 3 steps that we feel would help you get an edge compared to the thousands of individuals in the same journey as you;-

1. Courses

The very first Piscine Townhall of 42KL

Love being productive and looking for things you can do to upskill yourself? Courses are the way to go. There are many free courses available online and this is a good way for you to discover what you love and what you want to do in the future. You could learn a new language as employers are constantly looking for talents who are multilingual or you could also learn coding. Technology plays a huge role in our lives and it goes beyond how we work, but also how we live. Learning how to code goes beyond just getting a job as a software engineer or build applications, but also boost problem solving and logic skills. This is where 42KL comes in. A tuition-free computer programming school that has no teachers and classes, but focuses entirely on peer-to-peer learning.

If we look at big projects, there is always collaborations involved, and 42KL prepares you for the industry and helps you to be confident with your own abilities. What’s the catch, you may ask? You just have to be 18 years old, complete a two-hour logic test and you do not need any background in coding! Sign up for 42KL here.

Don’t be afraid to try out new things, it might even be life changing for you!

Sunway University’s Campus

Other than being excited about meeting new people, making new friends, learning new things every day, you will have to start thinking about what course you would like to take in the future and what job you would like to go for. Think about what interests you, and look for courses that relates to what you like. Read all about the course and your career options in the future before making a decision as this is a huge step as turning back in choices may incur additional costs and time. Don’t forget to go on a hunt for scholarships as well!

Sunway University has a range of programmes for pre-university studies as well as Diploma programmes to suit your pathway. Take a look at Sunway University’s offering and list of scholarships that are available for you!

With the time in hand prior to enrolling into a higher institution, you may want to venture into free courses to get a feel of what you would learn and what will the outcomes be at the end of the day. Even if you lose interest in the course, you still learned something and that knowledge will be helpful to you.

But wait! There’s more you can do!

If you are looking into earning some extra pocket money, you could apply for freelancing jobs! This will not only give you the opportunity to meet new people and create new connections but also gives you some working experience to build socializing skills. However, if you are looking into volunteering, you could try applying for animal shelters, vaccination centres and even soup kitchen!

With that, congratulations on moving to the next step in life! There’s no right or wrong way as to how you should live your life and this is the time of your life to try new things and focus on being the better version of yourself!
